Ordering Mower Blades from a Chinese Factory: What Buyers Should Check

Most replacement blades on the world's shelves are made in China. The reason is simple economics: blade manufacturing is blanking, forming, heat treatment and grinding, and those four steps are cheaper to run at scale here than almost anywhere else. What separates a good supplier from an expensive lesson is not the country — it is what you ask for before you place the order.

This is the checklist we would want a buyer to use on us.

1. Ask what grade of steel, not just "steel"

"High carbon steel" is not an answer. Ask for the grade, and expect one of these:

  • 65Mn manganese steel — the standard for mower blades that have to survive impacts from stones and stumps. Manganese buys toughness, so the edge rolls instead of shattering.
  • Boron steel (e.g. 40MnB, 50MnB) — used where a harder edge is wanted, but it is less forgiving on rough ground.
  • Mild carbon steel — cheap, and it will show. Blades lose their edge fast and bend instead of cutting.

A supplier who cannot name the grade on the spot is usually not the one running the furnace.

2. Treat hardness as a range, and ask for the report

Hardness is the single number that predicts how the blade behaves in the field.

  • Too soft and the edge rolls over within a season.
  • Too hard and the blade chips or snaps on the first rock.

For mower blades, 45–50 HRC is the working range. Two things matter beyond the number itself:

  • Is it held through the part, or only at the surface? A surface reading can look right while the core stays soft.
  • Is it tested per batch, and can you see the record? Batch hardness testing is the difference between a claim and a process.

3. Ask about decarburisation — this one catches people out

When steel is heated for hardening, the outer skin can lose carbon. That skin is softer than the rest of the blade and it will not hold an edge. The industry measure is decarburisation depth; for blades, expect a supplier to hold it at or below roughly 0.1 mm.

This is a small technical question with a big filtering effect. Factories that heat treat in-house answer it immediately. Traders tend to go quiet.

4. Clarify whether heat treatment is in-house

Ask directly: do you run the heat treatment, or is it subcontracted?

If it is subcontracted, you have added a party between you and the one thing that determines blade life — and the ability to change it when a batch disappoints. In-house heat treatment is the single strongest signal that you are dealing with a manufacturer.

5. Nail down MOQ, tooling and sample terms

  • MOQ — for blades, common factory minimums sit in the 300–1,000 pcs range. Ask whether models can be mixed within one order; many factories allow it, and it lets you test a market without committing to a full container.
  • Tooling — if your blade is not an existing profile, ask who pays for the tooling, who owns it, and what happens to it if you move on.
  • Samples — get a pre-production sample and sign off on fitment and hardness, not just appearance. Agree in writing what a rejection looks like.

6. Inspection, packing and documents

  • Inspection: decide before production whether you want a third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV) and who pays. On a first order it is usually worth it.
  • Packing: agree carton dimensions, quantity per carton and pallet specification in writing. Vague packing is where shipping costs drift.
  • Documents: mower blades sit under HS code 820840000. Confirm your supplier can issue a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin without prompting.

7. Payment terms and lead time

The common structure is a deposit against the order (often 30%) with the balance against the bill of lading copy, or a letter of credit for larger orders. Be wary of a supplier who wants the full amount up front, and equally wary of one who offers terms that no factory would actually accept — that is usually a trader buying time.

Ask for lead time in writing and ask what happens when production slips. A factory that quotes a realistic 25–35 days and explains the variables is a better partner than one who promises 15.
